Anita Cerquetti (born April 13, 1931 in Montecosaro , Macerata Province , † October 11, 2014 in Perugia ) was an Italian opera singer ( soprano ).

Life

Cerquetti completed a vocal training at the Liceo Musicale Morlacchi in Perugia . In 1949 she made her debut in a concert. Her stage debut followed in 1951 in Spoleto in the title role of the opera Aida by Giuseppe Verdi . In 1954 she appeared at the Teatro Municipale in Reggio nell'Emilia in the title role of the opera Loreley by Alfredo Catalani . In 1955 she sang the Abigaille in Nabucco in Florence .

She performed several times in the Arena di Verona . In 1953 she sang Aida and Leonora in Der Troubadour there . In 1956 she sang the title role in the opera La Gioconda by Amilcare Ponchielli . 1957 followed the title role in the opera Norma by Vincenzo Bellini , with Franco Corelli as Pollione and Giulietta Simionato as Adalgisa . In the 1955/1956 season she sang for the first time at the Lyric Opera in Chicago . Her inaugural role there was Amelia in Giuseppe Verdi's Un ballo in maschera . In 1956/1957 she was again the Aida at the Rome Opera , with Franco Corelli as a partner.

In January 1957 she sang Amelia in Un ballo in maschera in Florence . Her partners were Ebe Stignani , Gianni Poggi and Ettore Bastianini . At the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino she sang Noraime in Les Abencérages by Luigi Cherubini in 1957 . Under the direction of Dimitri Mitropoulos , Elvira in Ernani followed in Florence in 1957 at the side of Mario del Monaco , Ettore Bastianini and Boris Christoff .

In 1957 she appeared at the Teatro Massimo in Palermo as Aida , as Elisabetta di Valois in Don Carlo (again with Franco Corelli as a partner) and as Santuzza in Cavalleria rusticana by Pietro Mascagni . In the summer of 1957 she sang in the Baths of Caracalla , the Aida and Leonora in La forza del destino .

She had further appearances in 1957 in the Town Hall in New York in the opera Paride ed Elena by Christoph Willibald Gluck , in Philadelphia (as Norma ) and in Mexico City (October 1957 as troubadour Leonora and Aida ). In the fall of 1957, she performed at the Lyric Opera in Chicago as Amelia and Elisabetta di Valois . In December 1957 and January 1958 she performed as Norma at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples .

She became known when, on January 4, 1958, only two days after a Norma performance in Naples, she stood in for the sick Maria Callas as Norma at the Rome Opera. In January 1958 she sang Norma alternately in Rome and Naples . In February 1958 further Norma performances followed in Naples.

In June 1958 she made her debut at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan as Abigaille . Her partners were Giulietta Simionato, Gianni Poggi, Ettore Bastianini and Nicola Zaccaria . In 1958 she appeared again in Mexico City (Forza- Leonora , Aida ) and in Philadelphia (October 1958 as Troubadour- Leonora ). In 1959, Cerquetti did not appear on the opera stage. In 1960 she returned to La Scala in Milan for several concert performances of sacred works. In September 1960 Cerquetti then also returned to the opera stage and sang back in Lucca the Amelia in Un ballo in maschera . In October 1960, performances as Abigaille followed in Holland , which already showed vocal difficulties. The performances in Hilversum were her last public appearances as a singer.

Cerquetti then studied the role of Imogene in Vincenzo Bellini's opera Il pirata for the Opera House in Palermo , but canceled all performances at short notice because she did not feel sufficiently prepared to sing this role already. A short time later she ended her career and withdrew completely into private life. The reasons for this withdrawal have never been fully clarified. Cerquetti later stated in an interview that she did not want to expose herself to the stress and the constant pressure of deadlines.

During her short career only two commercial recordings were made for the Decca company . In 1957 an album with Italian opera arias and the complete recording of the opera La Gioconda by Amilcare Ponchielli was released.

In 1996, she starred in the film love waste products of Werner Schroeter with. In this poetic and melancholy documentary she spoke again in front of the camera about her career and the loss of her voice. Schroeter broadcast the final scene of the film to Cerquetti, in which she sings again in the playback to her sound recordings from the 1950s. The film was also released on DVD in 2009. Another documentary followed in 1999, Opera Fanatic by Jan Schmidt-Garre , in which Cerquetti can also be seen in an interview with other important Italian opera singers of the 20th century.
