Jan Schmidt-Garre (born June 18, 1962 in Munich ) is a German director and producer .

biography

Jan Schmidt-Garre was born as the son of the musicologist Helmut Schmidt-Garre and the critic Beate Kayser. From 1982 to 1986 he studied philosophy at the University of Philosophy of the Jesuits in Munich (MA with a semiotic thesis on Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen ) and from 1984 to 1988 directing at the University of Television and Film in Munich, feature film department.

During his school days and studies he worked as an assistant director and trainee with the directors Rudolf Noelte , David Esrig , Joachim Herz , Jean-Pierre Ponnelle and Harry Kupfer (among others at the Salzburg Festival , the Bayreuth Festival , at the Metropolitan Opera, New York, and at the Dresden State Opera ).

He studied conducting and music theory with the conductor Sergiu Celibidache in public courses and private lessons in Mainz, Munich and Paris.

In 1988 Schmidt-Garre founded the production company Pars Media , which achieved international renown with documentaries and fiction films on music and art and has received many prizes, including a nomination for the German Film Prize and main prizes at the Chicago film festivals , Paris, Monte Carlo, Ohio, Munich and Prague. The films have been shown in over thirty countries, shown in theaters and released on Laser Disc, VHS and DVD.

Schmidt-Garre regularly stages operas in Germany and Switzerland.

Schmidt-Garre is a member of the German Film Academy and regularly takes on teaching positions for direction and aesthetics (including at the HFF in Munich and at the Athanor Academy for Theater, Film, TV in Passau). He is married to the art dealer Philomene Magers. You have two children and live in Berlin.
