Herbert Weinstock

Herbert Weinstock (born November 16, 1905 in Milwaukee ; died October 21, 1971 in New York City ) was an American music critic and music historian.

Life

Herbert Weinstock dropped out of the University of Chicago and worked as an independent bookseller for three years. He moved to New York and wrote two music books with his then friend Wallace Brockway. In 1943 Weinstock was employed by the Alfred A. Knopf publishing house , where he edited the music program for the next few years and also published his own books. His musician biographies have been published several times. The book about Vincenzo Bellini was published posthumously, a manuscript about Christoph Willibald Gluck is in his estate in the New York Public Library .

Weinstock has written music reviews for The Saturday Review , The New York Times, and Opera magazine . He authored over 300 encyclopedic articles in the Encyclopedia Americana .

Weinstock translated the fictional artist biography Jusep Torres Campalans from the Spanish essays by the Mexican composer Carlos Chávez and Max Aub , as well as Francesco Carletti's world tour from the Italian and essays by the composer Pierre Boulez from the French.
