Heinkel He 277

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Heinkel He 277 was a heavy German long-range bomber of the Second World War with a crew of six to seven, which was developed from the He 177 .

description

It was a project that Heinkel had submitted to the Reich Aviation Ministry (RLM) in 1942 as a candidate for the America bomber competition. The four drives were housed in a conventional design in two gondolas per wing. The fuselage was similar to that of the four-engined version He 177A-7 and He 177B-7 from Bristol Blenheim, He 177A-7, but differed in that the rear-facing turret was also moved behind the bomb tag as the aft hydraulic rotary mount HDL 151Z hydraulically driven manned tower. The tail unit was similar to that of the planned production He 177B with double rudders. Three prototypes and 10 pre-production aircraft were planned, but the He 277 design never reached the hardware stage before the He 277 program was canceled in April 1944.

Some older sources confused the He 177B and He 277, claiming that He 177B was a cover designation invented by Heinkel for the He 277. However, the RLM and Heinkel project documents clearly show that the He 177B designation was assigned to the four-engine version of The He 177 months after Heinkel's American bomber proposal was officially designated as the He 277.
