The Heinkel He 170 was built in 1937 as an export version of the He 70 F long-range reconnaissance aircraft for Hungary with a Gnôme-Rhône 14K Mistral Major engine built under license . This fourteen-cylinder double radial engine was covered with a NACA hood . Further structural differences were an adjustable three-bladed metal propeller and a rigid, clad tail wheel opposite the retractable skid spur of the He 70 F. In the rear fuselage there was a defensive stand (pot) that could be extended downwards. A small series was built and delivered for Hungary.
