The Caspar SI was a multi-purpose aircraft made by the German manufacturer Caspar-Werke AG in the 1920s. The S I was later referred to as the HE 1 by its designer Ernst Heinkel .

history

The SI was designed by Ernst Heinkel in 1921 while he was a designer at the Caspar Works. The order was brokered by Carl Clemens Bücker on behalf of the Swedish Air Force . Heinkel developed the S I from the tried and tested Hansa-Brandenburg W.29 , a seaplane from the First World War, and also used construction work that had already been carried out from the project of the W 37 that was not completed . The S I was produced in the Svenska Aero AB works in Stockholm (Sweden) or assembled from parts that were smuggled from Germany. Svenska Aero was founded in Sweden in 1922 by Bücker. After Heinkel left Caspar-Werke at the end of 1922 in order to set up his own company, he began counting his designs with the S I, which he called HE 1 (Heinkel Monoplane 1).

The S II, which was also developed by Heinkel in 1922 at the Caspar Works, only differed in that the engine was hung on a steel frame. On the S I, the engine was built into the fuselage, which was protected by a fire bulkhead. The S II was designated as S 3 by the Swedish Air Force and later as HE 2 by Heinkel .

The SI was a single-engine, wooden, low- wing aircraft with two floats made of duralumin , which were braced towards the wing and the fuselage.

Use and whereabouts

The actual use of the probably eleven built machines cannot be clarified beyond doubt. It is reported that the Swedish Air Force received all copies and used them. The seven remaining in 1926 are said to have been given the designation S 2 after the Swedish Air Force was founded. "S" stands for "Spaning" (education).

It is more probable, however, that the production was carried out on the secret order of the German Navy and that the aircraft were bought back via various mock and camouflage devices and were ultimately used in Germany. According to this, the assembly should have taken place in 1923 and the aircraft were then stored. The export application is said to have passed through a "Brazilian trading company".

One Caspar SI and ten Heinkel HE 1s were listed in the "Deutsche Luftfahrzeugrolle", such as the D 292, the D 450 and the D 830. The first owner of the D 830 (serial number 5010) was Severa GmbH ; from 1929 the " Deutsche Luft Hansa ", coastal flight department. Other owners were mostly the " Deutsche Luftdienst GmbH", the " DVL e. V. "and" DVS GmbH ". The D 292 won the Gothenburg International Aviation Competition in 1923 .

The majority of the aircraft were in service until 1934.
