The Heinkel He 49 ( HD 49 ) was a single-engine fighter aircraft made by Ernst Heinkel Flugzeugwerke in 1932. It could be equipped with a rigid landing gear with a split axle and grinding spur, but also with double floats .

history

The HD 49a fighter aircraft (Wnr. 371, registration D-2363, later D-IREH) was manufactured as a one-off piece for the Navy in 1931/32 . The flights took place from November 1932 at the See trial site in Travemünde and at the Rechlin trial site . There, the aircraft was compared and tested in aerial combat with both the predecessor model Heinkel HD 38 and the fighter Arado Ar 65 . The HD 49 , however, was judged by the Army Weapons Office to be "very complicated in structure and consequently absolutely unsuitable for series production", so that no further copies were built. The required simplification was finally taken into account in the further development, the He 51 .

technical description

The aircraft was a single-handled, braced one-and-a -half-decker with a smaller wing span and profile depth and with ailerons only on the upper surface. The fuselage consisted of a welded tubular steel framework with a rectangular cross-section and was clad in the front part up to the pilot's seat with removable light metal sheets. The remaining part was made oval with wooden strips and covered with fabric. The tail units braced against each other and towards the fuselage were fabric-covered metal frames. All rudders were aerodynamic and mass balanced.
