Saurauia is a plant genus in the family of actinidiaceae (Actinidiaceae).

description

The species in this genus grow as a shrub or tree . The simple and stalked leaves are opposite and more or less hairy to scaly.

The inflorescence is an axillary or almost terminal thyrse or panicle. The species are dioecious separately sexed ( dioecious ) or functionally unisexual. The mostly five, otherwise between three and eight sepals are usually roof-top. The usually five, otherwise between three and nine, mostly roof-top petals are often white. There are many stamens present. The upper ovary often has several, more or less overgrown or less often free styles .

The fleshy berry contains numerous small seeds in its slimy, clear flesh.

The genus is common in tropical America and in tropical Asia to Australia .

The fruits of some species are edible.

Systematics

The first description by Carl Ludwig von Willdenow was published in 1801. The name Saurauja proposed by Willdenow was ultimately changed to Saurauia . Willdenow was director of the botanical garden in Berlin and received specimens of a Saurauia species from Baron von der Lühe from the Schönbrunn garden in Vienna with the approval of Franz Josef Graf Saurau , Minister of the Interior and Supreme Chancellor . As a thank you, Willdenow named the newly discovered plant genus after Count von Saurau.
