Live and act

Life

Carl Ludwig Willdenow came from a Berlin pharmacist family . His father Johann Carl Willdenow (November 12, 1737– January 8, 1790) married Dorothea Louise Budde (August 7, 1731– February 7, 1786) in 1763, a daughter of the royal physician August Budde and widow of the pharmacist Friedrich Stephani. As a result, Willdenow's father became the owner of the Zum rothen Adler pharmacy on January 19, 1763 , which was located on Unter den Linden 53 on the corner of Friedrichstrasse (today Unter den Linden 25). He had two sisters.

Willdenow first attended a Latin school and from the age of 13 the Friedrichswerder high school . He then began an apprenticeship in his father's pharmacy. He was instructed in chemistry by Martin Heinrich Klaproth . Under the guidance of Johann Gottlieb Gleditsch , Willdenow set up his first herbarium . Most of the plants came from excursions in the Berlin area, in which Kurt Sprengel occasionally took part.

On April 25, 1785 Willdenow enrolled at the Friedrichs University in Halle to study medicine . From 1787 to 1788 Willdenow deepened his chemical training in Langensalza with Johann Christian Wiegleb . During this time he undertook extensive hikes through central Germany . On February 16, 1789 Willdenow received his doctorate in Halle under the deanery of Philipp Friedrich Theodor Meckel with the botanical script De achilleis . After his father's death in the same year, Willdenow took over his father's pharmacy, which he ran until 1793. In 1790 Willdenow reported in a letter to Paul Usteri that he had bought his own garden with a small greenhouse. On November 1, 1790, he married Henriette Luise Habermus. They had a son Carl Wilhelm (born July 1, 1795–?) Whose godfather was Alexander von Humboldt .

Willdenow died on July 10, 1812 in Berlin in the presence of Ernst Ludwig Heim and Diederich Friedrich Carl von Schlechtendal (1767–1842). He was buried in the churchyard at the Dorotheenstädtische Church . Before the leveling of the Dorotheenstadt church and the churchyard in 1965, Willdenow's tombstone was removed and secured. This epitaph stands in his memory today in the entrance hall of the Botanical Museum Berlin-Dahlem .

Act

In 1787, Berlin's Vieweg Verlag published his first extensive publication, Florae Berolinensis prodromus . 1790 appeared with Historia Amaranthorum Willdenow's monograph on the plant genus Amaranthus . In 1792 Willdenow published the first edition of his Grundriss der Herbalologie zu Vorlesungen , a short textbook on botany . Four more editions followed during his lifetime. It has been translated into Dutch and English. Joseph August Schultes and Johann Heinrich Friedrich Link later published revised editions.

On February 2, 1798, Willdenow became a full professor of natural history at the Berlin Collegium medico-chirurgicum . In 1800 he traveled to Hanover and the Harz Mountains . As the successor to Johann Christoph Andreas Mayer , Willdenow was appointed director of the Royal Botanical Garden of the Royal Academy of Sciences in Neu-Schöneberg on July 7, 1801 , which was located on the site of today's Kleistpark . In 1803 he traveled to Dresden and Bohemia . From August to December 1804 he toured northern Italy . In 1807 a trip to Vienna followed .

In September 1803 Willdenow began to publish the Hortus berolinensis in which he presented rare or little-known plants from the Berlin botanical garden. The work was published in nine fascicles in folio format by 1812 . It contains a total of 108 hand-colored copper engravings of plants. Among them are about 80 species described for the first time . It was supplemented by a tenth delivery from Johann Heinrich Friedrich Link in 1816. In 1804 a second textbook was published with the title Instructions for Self-Study of Botany, a manual for public lectures in which Willdenow presented important genera based on individual species based on the Linnean sexual system, with a focus on useful and medicinal plants. The Enumeratio plantarum Horti Regii Berolinensis , published in two parts in 1809, is a complete record of all plants that were cultivated in the Berlin Botanical Garden in the summer of 1808. It contains short descriptions in Latin of 6351 species from 1180 genera.

In 1810 Willdenow was appointed the first full professor of botany at the newly founded Friedrich Wilhelms University . In the autumn of 1810 Willdenow followed a request from Alexander von Humboldt, whom he had known since 1788, and traveled to Paris . There he was supposed to process the botanical yield of the research trip through South and Central America undertaken by Humboldt and Aimé Bonpland . Due to illness, he returned to Berlin at the end of April 1811.

Memberships

In 1787 he was in Halle an ordinary member of the Society of Natural Sciences in Halle and on January 16, 1794 as a full member of the et Académie Royale des Sciences Belles-Lettres selected. In 1795 he became a member of the Society of Friends of Natural Science in Berlin . In 1800 he became a full member of the Churfürstlich Mayntzischen Academie of Useful Sciences and in 1801 a member of the Regensburg Botanical Society . Since 1808 he was a foreign member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences . In 1810 he was one of the founding members of the Society for Nature and Medicine in Berlin .

Honors

On January 18, 1810 Willdenow was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle III. Class awarded.

The genus Willdenowia Thunb was named in his honor . named from the plant family of the Restionaceae . Willdenowia magazine, which has been published since 1953, is also named after him. The Botanical Garden Berlin awards the Willdenow Medal .

In Berlin, two streets are named after Willdenow: in the immediate vicinity of the Botanical Garden, Willdenowstraße in Berlin-Lichterfelde and in Berlin-Wedding, Willdenowstraße near the Wedding subway station .
