The Heinkel He 343 was a projected German high-speed bomber with jet propulsion from the Ernst Heinkel Flugzeugwerke during World War II . As the Ilyushin Il-22 , the project was realized in one copy from 1946 after the Soviets had studied captured construction plans.

history

Work on the Heinkel He 343 began at the beginning of 1944. In order to keep the development time short, the Arado Ar 234, which had already been tried and tested, was used as a basis . However, the cell was enlarged to accommodate a two-man crew and a higher bomb load. Four jet engines were planned, with the thrust varying between 900 kp ( Jumo 004 ) and 1300 kp ( Heinkel HeS 011 ), depending on the design and availability of the engines. The bomb load was later increased from the required 2000 kg to 3000 kg. The high service ceiling of 15,000 m made enemy fighter attacks unlikely.

In the early planning phase, the German Research Institute for Glider Flight (DFS) was commissioned by the overloaded Ernst Heinkel Flugzeugwerke to develop preliminary designs for a four- to six- engine bomber . Under the project name He P.1068, the aircraft soon took on the typical contours with the large glazed bow pulpit. DFS developed a suitable wing shape for this project and created a wooden model for it. However, the design was later changed and all work was returned to Ernst Heinkel Flugzeugwerke. An enlarged version of the Arado Ar 234 was given preference, which was called Heinkel He 343. The work on the plans for this large machine had largely been completed by the end of the war.

The project was canceled in 1944 when the hunter emergency program began .
