RLM type list
The RLM type list was a system of the Reich Aviation Ministry (RLM) for the designation of aircraft . In 1929 and 1930 discussions took place between the Army Armed Forces Office in the Reichswehr Ministry , the aviation industry and other institutions to replace the aircraft designations freely chosen by the respective manufacturers with uniform ones. The new designations are made up of a two-letter abbreviation for the manufacturer, with the first letter in upper case and the second in lower case, and an at least two-digit number that was assigned by a central office. The two-letter abbreviation was previously only used by the manufacturers Dornier-Werke and Rohrbach .
The RLM system was broader: For the aircraft category, an 8 was placed in front, for example 8-109. Correspondingly, there were numbers for other categories, the 9 for piston engines, 108 for gliders (with a few exceptions, which were listed in category 8) and 109 for jet and rocket engines.
