The Dornier Do 317 was a medium-weight German bomber . The planning of the aircraft design began in 1940 and although the aircraft looks strongly reminiscent of the Do 217 , it was a new design.

Very few components of the Do 217 were adopted in the Do 317. The purpose of the redesign was to design the hull in such a way that a load of 3000 to 4000 kilograms could be accommodated in the hold. Versions A and B were planned.

The top speed was 585 km / h at an altitude of 6,000 meters with two Jumo 222  Ms used, each with an output of 2,000 hp (approx. 1,470 kW) and a takeoff weight of 20.15 tons. Four men were provided for the crew.

The first flight of the Do 317 V1 (VK + IY) took place on September 8, 1942 with captain Hans Dieterle as pilot. Six test aircraft were originally planned. However, no other aircraft was completed. The subsequent project (the Do 417 ) never got beyond the design stage. So the Do 317 was the last link in Dornier's 17 series.
