The Dornier "Spatz" was a high-wing aircraft from the company Dornier-Werke GmbH , which was planned as a training and sports aircraft in the 1920s , but only one copy was built.
description
The Dornier "Spatz" was a land plane version of the Dornier Do-A "Libelle II" . It differed from the Dragonfly II only in the external shape of the trunk. The boat step , the keel of the boat bottom and the lateral fin stubs were omitted . Because splash protection was no longer necessary, the bow of the fuselage could be shortened. Instead of the fin stubs, the machine was given a rigid chassis with a split axle and internal elastic tension spring.
The boat-shaped hull was made of duralumin using a shell construction. All seats were open, two next to each other were equipped with double controls, which were unusual at the time , and another seat was behind them. The all-metal wing with a fabric-covered rear wing was placed on a canopy and supported on each side with two struts on the fuselage; it could be folded back for transport and hangaring. The tail unit was cantilevered from light metal with fabric-covered oars. Originally an air-cooled Siemens Sh-5 radial engine with 82 HP was to serve as the engine , as was also used in the Libelle II. In fact, however, a three-cylinder Bristol Lucifer radial engine with 100 HP take-off power with a rigid 2-blade wooden propeller was used.
The first flight took place on February 12, 1924 in Löwental . However, the flight characteristics of the machine could not be satisfied, and the desired flight performance could not be achieved. All that is known about the fate of the prototype is that it was damaged during testing. It was probably not rebuilt, but scrapped. Since there was no demand for this Dornier pattern, no further copies were made.
