Dornier Do 231

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

With the Do 231 V-Jet project , Dornier won a design competition advertised by the German Federal Ministry of Economics for a future civil and military V / STOL transport aircraft for 100 passengers in the early 1970s . The requirement criteria were set by an expert committee with the participation of the ministries for economy, transport and defense as well as experts from aviation research, Lufthansa and industry. The proposal submitted by Dornier was based on experiences with the Dornier Do 31 .

description

The Do 231 was designed as a cantilevered shoulder- wing aircraft with swept wings and T-tail. The engine system should consist of two dual-circuit cruise engines in nacelles on stems in the wing center section and twelve lift engines. Four lift engines were provided in nacelles on the outer wings and two more each in the bow and stern.

The energy crisis in 1973 put an end to further planning, as the aircraft with the high energy requirements for vertical take-off would no longer have been economical.
