The Dornier RS IV was a four-engine monoplane - flying boat to the companies at Lake Constance Dornier works from the period of the First World War. The first flight took place on October 12, 1918.
history
This flying boat was the last of the Dornier “giant flying boat” (Rs) series. It was very similar to its predecessor, the Dornier Rs III , but had one major innovation: It had a "Dornier fin stub" on each side of the hull, which ensured high lateral stability when swimming and rolling at sea, which made it much easier to take off and ditching and allowed a reduction of the boat width from 4.7 to 3.5 m. The engines were again in a tandem arrangement in two gondolas between the hull and the upper hull. In contrast to the RS III, the control unit was no longer designed as a box tail unit. After the first flight and testing on Lake Constance, the Rs IV was to be converted into a commercial flying boat for 20 passengers. However, these plans could not be realized.
construction
The boat hull was 14.2 m long, hollow, made of all-metal shell construction and provided with the described fin stubs. The pilots had their place in the boat hull, parts of the other crew were in the upper hull.
The wings with struts and bracing formed a high-wing parachute. They had three steel spars, ribs made of duralumin and a fabric covering.
The tail unit was of normal construction with an elevator and a rudder that protruded both above and below the fuselage.
