The Dornier Do 417 was the design for a twin-engined bomber aircraft that was developed in 1942 at the request of the Air Force General Staff , but never went into series production because it never got beyond the design stage. Before the Dornier Do 417, Dornier developed the Dornier Do 317 .
In 1942 the General Staff of the Air Force requested Junkers , Heinkel , Blohm & Voss and Dornier to design a bomber plane. Heinkel presented his project P. 1065, Blohm & Voss P. 163, Junkers the Ju 88E , which then became the Ju 188 , and Dornier the new design Do 417. In December, the decision in favor of the Dornier design seemed to be made. The Do 417V-1 was to be completed by August 1943. Then series production could have started in April 1944.
For production reasons and because of the higher speed, the decision was made in favor of the Ju 188.
