The Dornier Rs II was a four-engine biplane - flying boat of the local Lake Constance aircraft manufacturer Dornier works from the period of the First World War. In the first version with three engines, the first flight took place on June 30, 1916. The final version with four engines first flew on November 6, 1916.
history
The development built on the experience of the Dornier Rs I on. Originally, three engines were now planned in the fuselage, which should drive pusher propellers via long-distance shafts. Support floats were also provided on the lower wing, which were expected to increase the lateral stability. After a few attempts, however, it became clear that it could be dispensed with, and with it Claude Dornier created the first inherently stable flying boat. The first flight took place on June 30, 1916. During the tests, the shape of the fuselage was changed several times, and another step was installed at the stern.
With this knowledge, the aircraft was then changed significantly. Now four engines were used, which were placed in tandem in two gondolas between the wings. This arrangement was to be typical of Dornier for a long time. After these modifications, the name of the aircraft was changed to Dornier Do IIb , the first flight took place on November 6, 1916.
construction
The hull with a length of 11.8 m was a metal construction with three bulkheads and also planked with metal. An open steel framework construction served as the tail girder. The tail unit was box-shaped with two vertical and vertical stabilizers.
The two wings were of significantly different sizes, so the aircraft could be described as a one-and-a-half-decker. They were constructed with three steel spars and ribs made of light metal and covered with fabric.
Four Maybach Mb IVs with 240 hp each served as propulsion - two engines each in two gondolas between the wings, which acted on fixed two-blade propellers made of wood.
