The Dornier Rs III was a four-engine monoplane - flying boat of the local Lake Constance aircraft manufacturer Dornier works from the period of the First World War. The first flight took place on November 4, 1917.
history
The flying boat was a further development of the two predecessors Dornier Rs I and Dornier Rs II , which were still double-deckers and one-and-a-half deckers . In the DO Rs III , the lower wing has now been omitted and the wingspan of the upper one has been increased. The tandem arrangement of the four engines typical for Dornier was chosen again. The engine pods arranged close to the fuselage should reduce asymmetrical thrust in the event of an engine failure and also enable one or two engines to be shut down during long reconnaissance flights in order to save fuel. On February 19, 1918, the aircraft was able to fly non-stop from Lake Constance to Norderneybe transferred. A series of flight tests with up to 3400 kg payload and with continuous flights of 10 to 12 hours then took place over the North Sea.
construction
The hull was 12.60 m long and made of duralumin. Above the wing was another fuselage with a rectangular cross-section, consisting of four steel spars and duralumin frames, as a tail unit support. It was planked with duraluminum at the front and covered with fabric at the back.
The wings with struts and bracing formed a high-wing parachute. They had three steel spars, ribs made of duralumin and a fabric covering.
The box-shaped tail unit had a vertical tail, but two horizontal tail units, and was attached to the upper fuselage with handles and bracing.
