The Dornier Do 25 is a STOL multi-purpose aircraft that was built at Oficinas Técnicas Dornier in Spain.

History and construction

The aircraft was developed and built from 1950 onwards by the "Oficinas Técnicas Dornier" in Spain on the basis of a tender by the Spanish Aviation Ministry. Claude Dornier had gone to Spain with a staff of his designers because of the aircraft construction that was banned in Germany after the Second World War. The aircraft is considered to be the direct forerunner of the successful post-war Dornier Do 27 aircraft , which was later built in series in Germany with only a few necessary improvements.

The Do 25, designed for good slow flight characteristics and short take-off and landing distances, was an all-metal shoulder- wing aircraft with a fixed slat over the entire span and with double-slit ailerons and lift flaps. Contour and dimensions already corresponded to the later Do 27. The construction of two prototypes and a break cell for strength tests took place at CASA in Seville (fuselage, landing gear and final assembly) and Cádiz (wings and control surfaces).

The prototype Do 25 P1 flew for the first time on June 25, 1954 in Seville-Tablada with a 150 HP engine of the type Elizalde Tigre G-IV-B and a non-adjustable propeller.

The second prototype, the Do 25 P2C, flew for the first time on April 8, 1955 with a 225 hp Continental engine of the type O-470-J and a two-blade controllable pitch propeller with a constant speed device. With this much better propulsion power, the expected short take-off and landing characteristics of the machine as well as its flight performance and the high lift coefficients of the wings could be fully verified.
