The Heinkel HD 38 was a German fighter aircraft. HD stands for "Heinkel double decker".

history

The Heinkel HD 38 was developed in the late 1920s. It is the successor to the HD 37 with a reinforced chassis for catapult experiments. The test model from 1929, the HD 38a, was compared with the Fokker D.XIII in Lipezk . The prototype of the HD 38b with the registration number D-1609 (W.Nr. 320) had a covered radiator under the engine. With this, a hot cooling system and a front cooler were tested in Travemünde. Chief pilot Rolf Starke set a speed record with 500 kg payload of 259.927 km / h on May 7, 1929. The HD 38c was also tested in Travemünde. A disguised chassis was tested on the aircraft with the registration numbers D-2213 and D-2386. The D-2061 and D-2078 broke.

construction

Despite the similarity to the HD 37, the HD 38 is a new design. The Heinkel HD 38 was a compact single-engine biplane with staggered wings of the same span, which were connected to each other by N-struts. The conventional tail unit was braced towards the fuselage. The driver's seat was open. The HD 38 had a tailskid landing gear . A conversion to a seaplane was quickly possible by replacing the wheels with floats.
