Flettner Fl 339

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Flettner Fl 339 was a project for a German military helicopter .

The helicopter was developed in 1944 after an order from the Reich Aviation Ministry for a helicopter with a higher payload than the Flettner Fl 282 . The rotor arrangement with two intermeshing rotors was taken over from the Fl 282, but the rotor diameter should be increased to 13.2 meters. One innovation was the combination of the drive components in one unit. The engine - a 240 hp, air-cooled Argus-As-10-C eight-cylinder V-engine  - was to be accommodated with the gearbox in a gondola between the cabin and the rotors. The crew compartment, in which the two seats were to be placed back to back, consisted only of a tubular steel frame. Due to the course of the war, no more test samples were made.
