The Fieseler Fi 168 was a ground attack aircraft designed by Fieseler Flugzeugbau Kassel in 1938 .
History and construction
The technical office of the Reich Aviation Ministry (RLM) requested an aircraft for ground combat support. At Fieseler Flugzeugbau Kassel, construction of such a machine began on September 1, 1938.
The project was carried out until a well-equipped dummy was built . The hull of this dummy was open on the starboard side in order to provide a view of the interior. Several details can be seen in the attached photo.
The twin-engine machine was to be designed as a strutted high-wing aircraft with two tail girders. A narrow fuselage was suspended from the wing, braced with the tail girders and the wide-gauge landing gear. A tail wheel was located under each of the two vertical stabilizers. As with the Fieseler “Storch”, the wing was equipped with slats . The machine had a low wing loading. All of this suggests that this aircraft should also be able to operate from small areas in impassable terrain.
The then development director Erich Bachem described the Fi 168 as a "Panzer Storch". It is unclear what the term “tank” referred to. This machine could be an aircraft armored against fire from infantry weapons and / or a flying “tank destroyer”.
Two machine guns pointing rigidly forward were built into the dummy. The specified payload of about two tons suggests the transport of drop armaments.
Two Argus As 410 engines with 465 hp each were provided for the drive .
The continuation of the project was stopped in September 1939 on the instructions of the RLM.
