Argus AS 410

The Argus As 410 was an air-cooled overhead 60 ° twelve -cylinder V-engine from Argus . The engine became necessary after a lighter but more powerful drive than the Argus As 10 was required by the Reich Aviation Ministry (RLM). The air cooling was retained, as this was the only way to keep the power-to-weight ratio low. In order to better conduct the waste heat, the cylinder heads were rotated 45 °. To do this, the bumpers had to be placed at an angle and crossed to operate the hanging valves . The cylinder heads were screwed onto the cylinders with a fine thread . The Argus 410/411 engines were the last aircraft engines with carburetors to be developed in the German Reich until 1945.

The reduction gear for the propeller shaft was a planetary gear with a reduction of 0.67. In order to increase the performance compared to the AS 10 with almost the same displacement, a centrifugal loader driven by the crankshaft was installed. Development began in 1936 and was completed in 1938. Around 14,000 of the AS 410/411 series had been produced by the end of the war.

The engine was later developed into the Argus As 411 .
