The Messerschmitt Me 264 " America Bomber " was a fighter aircraft that was developed by Willy Messerschmitt during the Second World War, mainly to combat enemy shipping.
history
The Me 264 was a four-engine long-haul aircraft that was designed in 1941 mainly as a sea combat aircraft and incidentally as a transatlantic bomber to - as it was planned - to bomb selected cities on the US east coast - especially New York City . It went back to a draft of a long-haul aircraft submitted by Messerschmitt in the early 1930s , which was also known as the "antipode aircraft" because of its immense range of 15,000 km.
The first flight took place on December 23, 1942. The only prototypes V1 (initially with Junkers Jumo 211 ) and V2 ( BMW 801 D ) were destroyed in air raids. After that, production of the Me 264 was no longer started.
The Messerschmitt Me 264 had a groundbreaking effect thanks to the integral tanks in the wings instead of the sack or metal containers that had been customary up to that time, which enabled around 30 percent more fuel to be carried. The Messerschmitt Me 264 was the first aircraft in the world to be equipped with these tanks, which later became standard in aviation.
The series version of the Messerschmitt Me 264 should fly 12,000 to 15,000 km and be able to transport 3000 kg bombs.
