The Messerschmitt M28 was a German civil aircraft that was developed at the beginning of the 1930s by Bayerische Flugzeugwerke under the direction of Willy Messerschmitt as a special cargo aircraft for airmail traffic , which was becoming increasingly important at this time .

history

The construction took place in response to a tender by Luft Hansa from 1929 for a high-speed aircraft for the transport of mail, which should serve its routes between the European capitals. They demanded, among other adjacent seats of pilot and aircraft mechanic and a top speed of 260 km / h to a predetermined, of BMW manufactured under license Hornet - radial engine as a drive. When planning the aircraft, which was designed by Focke-Wulf as a parallel draft to the A 36 , they were based on the M18 , M20 and M24 commercial aircraft built by Messerschmitt and therefore initially designed it as a high - wing aircraft . After detailed performance calculations, it was decided to build the type as a low-wing aircraft. The only model produced with the serial number 527 received the license plate and began its flight tests with Franz Sido in mid-January, according to other sources in February 1931. The tests showed satisfactory performance, the conditions of the Luft Hansa with the exception of the relatively high due to the high wing loading Landing speed largely met. Since the client had meanwhile come to the conclusion that their requirements did not allow a sample that was optimally tailored to the intended use, the program was discontinued in 1932 and the M28 was handed over to the German Aviation Research Institute , which it used in its headquarters in Berlin-Adlershof for extensive strength tests used. It was later added to the German Aviation Collection in Berlin. D–2059

construction

The M28 was an all-metal aircraft in a cantilevered low-wing design. The seats for the two-person crew were arranged slightly offset in the cabin. The wing had to the level of the wing spar a planking Duraluminiumblechen and behind it was covered with fabric. The main wheels of the non-retractable and axleless landing gear were provided with aerodynamic panels and there was a grinding spur at the rear.
