The M18 was a single-engine airliner for four passengers that was manufactured by Messerschmitt Flugzeugbau GmbH in four different versions between 1925 and 1934 . In terms of design, it was a cantilevered shoulder-wing wing made of all-metal construction with a tailspur landing gear and cantilevered normal tail unit.
history
In 1925, Theodor Croneiß , the founder of Nordbayrische Verkehrsflug GmbH Fürth, commissioned the young Willy Messerschmitt , who was looking for orders for his aircraft construction company Messerschmitt GmbH, to develop a small airliner especially suitable for feeder traffic . A four-seater machine with a metal fuselage was to be developed that would meet the strength requirements for commercial aircraft and cost no more than 25,000 Reichsmarks. At that time, this price was about a third of the price of competing aircraft. Messerschmitt then developed the M18 from autumn 1925. The engine was the air-cooled 7-cylinder radial engine Sh 11 from Siemens & Halske with 80 HP starting power. The first prototype was made of wood and made its first flight in 1926. As a result, Messerschmitt then switched to an all-metal construction and built the first two series machines with the serial numbers 27 and 28. These were put into service from June 1926 by Nordbayerische Verkehrsflug Fürth accepted a total of 19 machines. A total of 26 aircraft of this type were built in four different variants by 1934. The machine pictured belonged to the Swiss Ad Astra Aero .
