The Gotha Go 244 was a direct further development of the cargo glider Gotha Go 242 from the Gothaer Waggonfabrik .

The biggest change concerned the installation of two motors on the tail girders, which turned the glider into a transport plane. The rest of the structure corresponded to the Gotha Go 242 A and B. However, the French Gnôme-Rhône star engines with 740 hp each proved to be too weak to be able to keep the machine loaded in the air.

construction

The Gotha Go 244 was a braced shoulder-wing aircraft with trapezoidal wings, two bar hulls and a fuselage with a square cross-section. The fuselage was made of tubular steel and was covered with fabric. The stumps were designed as wooden bowls.

The Go 244 C-1 variant had a float-like substructure for ditching and could be used to transport storm boats .

production

The first Go 244 were built as conversions and delivered in March 1942. Maschinenfabrik Niedersachsen Hannover (MNH) was involved in production as a licensee . The first new buildings were completed in October 1942. After it was found that the aircraft was unusable, production was discontinued in December 1942 and the Go 244 was converted back into the Go 242 cargo glider.
