Joseph Heller (local history researcher)
Joseph Heller (born September 22, 1798 in Bamberg , † June 4, 1849 ibid) was a German art collector , local researcher and (as an autodidact ) art researcher, one of the pioneers of modern art history in Germany.
Life
Heller was born the son of a businessman in Bamberg in the house at Untere Brücke 2. After school years at Bamberg high school , he completed a commercial apprenticeship in Nuremberg . Instead of the intended commercial existence, he devoted himself to art and became a private scholar .
His extensive and valuable collections include graphic sheets - when he died there were 50,000 pieces, with a focus on Albrecht Dürer , Lucas Cranach the Elder. Ä. and views on Franconian Switzerland , as well as manuscripts and old prints. His library with 6,000 volumes was matched to this . He bequeathed his collections to the Royal Library, today's Bamberg State Library . There they are kept in separate funds (known under the name Helleriana ).
Due to his lively scientific publication activity, which began in the 1820s, Heller is considered to be one of the pioneers of art historiography and research on Albrecht Dürer and Lukas Cranach the Elder. Ä. particularly. Further fundamental publications were devoted to Bamberg's art and cultural history.
