The Blohm & Voss Ha 140 was a German multi-purpose seaplane from Hamburger Flugzeugbau , a subsidiary of Blohm & Voss .
development
The aircraft was created as part of the tender for a successor to the Heinkel He 59 . The first flight of the Ha 140 V1 took place on September 30, 1937 on the Elbe near Finkenwerder . After a few flights and a structural change in which larger vertical stabilizers had been installed, this machine was transferred to Travemünde to the test site for seaplanes . Only three copies were made because the Heinkel He 115 won the tender. The third and last example, the V3, served as a test vehicle for the Flettner flaps from Blohm & Voss BV 222 .
construction
The aircraft was developed as a twin-engine floatplane. Similar in structure to the Blohm & Voss Ha 139 , i.e. in all-metal construction with a tubular spar and gull wing . Two BMW 132 L radial engines with 800 hp each served as drive . The crew consisted of a pilot, radio operator and gunner, who found space in a rotating gun turret in the bow of the fuselage.
The twist vane is a special feature. The tubular spar design of the wing made it possible to change the angle of the wing. This was particularly beneficial for the landing approach, as the aircraft could be held straight and only the wings were tilted. This system was tested in the Ha 140 and successfully used in the Blohm & Voss BV 144 .
