The Blohm & Voss P 170 was the project for a two-seat fighter aircraft from the Hamburger Flugzeugbau under Blohm & Voss .
construction
The three-engine design was created in 1942 under the direction of Richard Vogt , but never got beyond the project stage. Although the machine - in contrast to other designs by the designer - had a symmetrical design of the fuselage and wings, it looked quite unusual. The rectangular wings, which are arranged far forward, contributed to this . In addition to the engine in the tip of the fuselage, the other two engines were arranged on the wing tips in engine pods. These gondolas also carried the rudders . The crew sat very far back directly in front of the tail unit in the elongated cylindrical fuselage .
The machine was supposed to be powered by three 1600 hp BMW 801 Ds, each of which had a three-bladed propeller with a diameter of 3.5 meters. Each engine was fed from a separate 2,000 liter fuel tank . The two outer motors turned in different directions in order to counteract the torque forces that arise when running in the same direction and to generate additional lift. A tail wheel landing gear with one retractable main landing gear wheel in the fuselage and the two engine pods was planned.
The design for a high speed should prevent interception by enemy fighters . Defensive armament was therefore seen as dispensable.
