A multi-purpose aircraft (referred to in English as multi-role , multi-purpose or utility aircraft) is a civil or military type of aircraft that is not intended for a single or very narrowly restricted area of use (e.g. as a carrier or land-based model, as a bomb or transport aircraft ), but can be used in very different areas of application. With these models, specific attachments or conversions and additional loads can be made for certain areas of application. This design principle was typical from the start, especially for helicopters .

Modern aircraft in their basic version are often planned as a multi-purpose version and, depending on the area of application, are produced as extended types. This can be found in the military sector, for example, for multi-purpose combat aircraft that can also be used as fighters, reconnaissance aircraft or light bombers, or tanker aircraft that are also equipped as troop transports or cargo aircraft.
