Wolfgang Böhmer (* 1959 in Westphalia ) is a German composer , arranger and librettist who works primarily in the field of music theater.

Life

Böhmer initially studied music as a teacher in Wuppertal, and later musicology and philosophy at the Humboldt University in Berlin . At the same time, however, he worked early as a composer and actor in the field of political cabaret (“Fortschrott”). He was involved in demonstrations, cultural festivals, but also against Brokdorf or the West runway .

He then worked as a composer and actor in the Berlin underground musical company College of Hearts together with Thomas Pigor , Benedikt Eichhorn , Susanne Betancor and others. a. active and developed with them the type of a “New German Musical”. Böhmer also worked on larger Berlin theaters, such as the Deutsches Theater , Berliner Ensemble , Maxim-Gorki-Theater and the Komödie am Kurfürstendamm .

His compositions for the Neukölln Opera in Berlin were particularly formative and successful . Together with their artistic director Peter Lund , various musicals of a new type were created which, in contrast to the mainstream musical American style, combined socially critical content with catchy music and intelligent entertainment. In 2016 Stella - The blonde ghost from Kurfürstendamm received the German Musical Theater Prize .

Böhmer lives in Berlin. His marriage to actress and director Adriana Altaras had two sons, including Aaron Altaras , who also worked as an actor .
