Monga ( Chinese 艋舺 , Pinyin Měngjiǎ , Pe̍h-ōe-jī Báng-kah ) is a 2010 Taiwanese fictional film directed by Doze Niu that depicts the underworld of Monga District (now: Wanhua ) in Taipei City in the 1980s Has content. The film received several awards and was also shown abroad. Taking the old Taipeh district of Monga as an example, the plot depicts the rapid modernization and de-traditionalization of urban society in the course of the economic boom in Taiwan in the 1980s, as well as the personal development of the main character Mosquito from naive youth to mature man and gangster.
action
The only child "Mosquito", the son of a single mother who runs a hairdressing salon, grows up in poor conditions and is repeatedly bullied by his peers because of his naive nature. After changing schools, he clashes with his terrorizing classmate Dog Boy in Monga, one of the oldest districts of Taipei. Through a tussle with him and his gang, the 4 "princes", a gang of young people from the underworld, notice him and take care of him. The now five “princes” Dragon Lee, Monk, A-po, Monkey and Mosquito experience all sorts of adventures in the Monga of the rival gangster gangs, which often lead to solid fights. Mosquito, matured through these experiences, falls in love with Ning, a prostitute who turns out to be his classmate from elementary school.
After the princes got themselves into trouble again and again, Boss Geta, the leader of the "temple gate gang" and father of Dragon Lee, finally takes on the young men and takes them to his school, teaching them discipline, martial arts, but also instructs in the code of honor of the traditional underworld of Monga. For example, Geta strictly opposes the use of modern firearms in conflicts with rivals.
Monga, which flourished thanks to the economic boom of the 1980s, soon began to attract underworlders from outside. The powerful Waisheng gang, armed with modern weapons, made up of mainland Chinese under the leadership of Gray Wolf (a former lover of Mosquito's mother) urges the traditional gangs of Monga to work together under their domination. Both Boss Geta and Boss Masa from the back alley gang reject Gray Wolf's suggestion. But the entry of modernity into the old gangster world can no longer be stopped: Wim Kian, a member of the back alley gang who wants to join the mainlanders, forges a plot, as a result of which Boss Masa is shot ("The first shot in Monga") and Wim Kian takes his place. This signals the beginning of the end of the old order of Monga, the traditional underworld is facing great upheavals, the friends of the prince's gang are facing an uncertain future.
