The 1993 presidential election in Nigeria took place on June 12, 1993 . It was the first choice since the 1983 military coup .

Further development
Although the election was widely viewed as free and democratic , it was canceled by military dictator Ibrahim Babangida .
Babangida resigned in August 1993 and set up a civilian government under Ernest Shonekan . In November 1993, Sani Abacha took power as the new military dictator.
When the election winner Moshood Abiola proclaimed himself the rightful president of Nigeria in 1994 , he was imprisoned and convicted of high treason. He died in prison in 1998.
