The first federal parliamentary elections in Nigeria took place on December 12, 1959.

The result was a clear win for the Northern People's Congress , which won a total of 134 of the 312 seats in the House of Representatives . He formed a coalition with five other parties and two independents, which together held a total of 148 seats. The turnout was 79.5%.
