John Greyson (2013)

John Greyson (born March 13, 1960 in Nelson , British Columbia ) is a Canadian director , screenwriter and film producer .

Life and accomplishments

His parents are Richard I. and Dorothy F., whose birth name is Auterson. Greyson grew up mostly in the Canadian city of London , in Ontario . He lived briefly in New York in the 1970s. He has lived in Toronto since 1980 and has written for The Body Politic and other magazines. In 1990 he attended Norman Jewison's film school , the Norman Jewison Canadian Film Center . However, Greyson mostly taught himself filmmaking. He has made several short films, wrote screenplays, directed television series and movies, and has won various awards. He often deals with homosexual topics, for example in the love drama Lilies - Theater of Passion (1996). As a professor at York University , he teaches film production and film editing.

At the Berlin International Film Festival in 1989 , Greyson received a Teddy Award for urinals and in 1991 one for the short film The Making of Monsters . In 1991 he won the Toronto International Film Festival for The Making of Monsters and in 1993 for Zero Patience . In 1996 he was awarded Best Canadian Film for Lilies - Theater of Passion at the World Film Festival . In 1994 he was nominated at the Genie Awards for Zero Patience and in 1996 for Lilies - Theater of Passion . A Gemini Award followed in 2002 for directing in Made in Canada . In 2009, the jury of the Hamburg Lesbian and Gay Film Festival awarded John Greyson's film "Fig Trees" the jury award. At 5,000 euros, this prize is the best endowed queer film prize in Germany.

Imprisonment in Egypt

On August 16, 2013, he was arrested with Tarek Loubani in Cairo and was held without charge or legal representation. Letters smuggled out of the prison tell of 36 detainees who had to share a mini-cell and of brutal abuse by police officers. Greyson actually wanted to travel to the Gaza Strip from Egypt to film how Loubani trained the staff of a hospital there. He was arrested when he and Loubani got into a commotion and asked police officers at a roadblock for directions to their hotel. He was released on October 5, 2013.
