Alfred Albert Hermann Elias (born October 2, 1876 in Cottbus ; † November 10, 1955 ) was a German meteorologist and aeronaut .

Life

Elias was the son of a Cottbus merchant. From 1899 to 1905 he worked with Richard Assmann at the Aeronautical Observatory Berlin-Tegel , then at the Imperial Patent Office in Berlin . In 1903 he had completed his dissertation on meteorology . Elias was an active member of the Berlin Airship Association . He was a member of the aeronautical engineering committee set up by the association in 1907 and edited the association's magazine Deutsche Zeitschrift für Luftschiffahrt from 1907 to 1911 . Illustrated aeronautical communications . In 1919 he took over the chairmanship of the association.

Elias was a passionate balloonist. Together with Arthur Berson , he set a German long-distance record in November 1901. They were able to outbid this on January 9 and 10, 1902, when their balloon carried them over 1,470 km from Berlin to Pyriatyn in eastern Ukraine . The journey time of 30 hours also represented a new German endurance record. During a scientific free balloon flight on July 3, 1902, Elias reached an altitude of 7830 meters. In 1902 he took Berson on a boat trip to Spitsbergen , during which they were the first to use weather kites in the Arctic . Financed by the Berliner Lokal-Anzeiger , he went to Spitsbergen again in the summer of 1907 with the journalist and polar researcher Theodor Lerner to advise the American Walter Wellman on meteorological issues when he tried to reach the North Pole with the airship America . In Wellman's camp on Danskøya , he again let weather kites and balloons soar. In 1908 he took part in the aerological expedition of the Lindenberg Aeronautical Observatory to East Africa , led by Berson .

In 1913, Elias accompanied the pilot Alfred Friedrich as a navigator on the flight from Berlin-Johannisthal to Paris . Your Etrich pigeon with a 100 hp six-cylinder Mercedes engine required a pure flight time of twelve hours. However, several stops had to be made to refuel or to ask for directions. Elias navigated with a compass and a railway map on a scale of 1: 100,000. In 1914 he flew with Friedrich from Berlin to Constantinople .

In the First World War he was an air officer, was promoted to captain in 1915 and from December 1916 was department leader of Feldfliegerabteilung 17 on the Western Front. He was awarded the Iron Cross, first and second class, and the Austrian Cross of Merit with war decorations .

From 1905 he was married to Josefine Radetzki. You lived in Berlin.
