After studying film directing at the Buenos Aires Film School, she worked as a television director for seven years. As an assistant director, she first worked on the shooting of Marco Bechis ' award-winning drama Junta in 1999 . In the following years she assisted well-known Argentinian filmmakers such as Lucrecia Martel ( La Ciénaga - Morast , 2001; La niña santa - The holy girl , 2004), Héctor Olivera ( Antigua vida mía , 2001), Alejandro Agresti ( mother wanted , 2002; Un mundo menos peor , 2004), but also debut directors such as Damián Szifron ( El fondo del mar , 2003) and Jorge Gaggero ( Cama adentro , 2004). Rompecabezas found in September 2009, included in the series Cine en Construcción the Film Festival of San Sebastián . There the film won the sponsorship award of the Spanish institute Casa de América , which supported the post-production with 10,000 euros. A few months later, Smirnoff received an invitation to compete at the 60th Berlin International Film Festival for her debut film , but Rompecabezas received no award there.
