Yu Nan

Yu Nan ( Chinese  余 男 , Pinyin Yú Nán ; born September 5, 1978 in Dalian , Liaoning Province , China ) is a Chinese actress .

Life

At the age of 17, Yu Nan left the native coastal city of Dalian to escape a predetermined life with a language school and a career perspective as an interpreter . Instead, she attended the Beijing Film Academy , where she was accepted as one of 15 out of 10,000 applicants. There, apart from her acting training, she was discovered by chance by the director Wang Quan'an for his debut film, Lunar Eclipse ( Chinese  月 蚀 , Pinyin Yuèshí ). In 2000 she won several international awards as the leading actress in the film.

In addition to her mother tongue, Yu Nan speaks fluent English and French, so that the first international film offers, such as the lead role of Chinh in the French film Fureur, followed. Her second collaboration with Wang Quan'an resulted in the film The Story of Ermei . For the portrayal of Ermei she was awarded several times as "Best Actress"; she won almost all Chinese film awards in this category in 2003/04. With the award-winning film drama Tuya's Wedding , she presented herself to a larger international audience for the first time, whereupon Hollywood directors began to be interested in her. For the Wachowski brothers , she stood in front of the camera in Speed ​​Racer (2008) alongside Emile Hirsch and Christina Ricci .

In 2010 she was appointed to the competition jury of the 60th Berlin International Film Festival .
