German nomination committee

In July 1999 the German UNESCO Commission decided to found a national nomination committee for the Memory of the World program . The historian Joachim-Felix Leonhard was commissioned to chair the panel of experts .

While the nominations for world cultural and natural heritage are made by the German federal states, individuals, associations and non-governmental organizations can also submit proposals to the International Advisory Committee in the Memory of the World program . Even before the first meeting of the German Nomination Committee with the Berlin Phonogram Archive, the first German contribution based on a joint proposal by the archive with the Vienna Phonogram Archive was included in the World Document Heritage Register.

The task of the German nomination committee consists of examining and evaluating submitted proposals, as well as developing its own proposals for the world register. Since 2007, each member state of UNESCO can only submit two proposals to the International Advisory Committee every two years. Following the recommendations of the Advisory Committee, the General Director of UNESCO finally decides on the recognition.
