Richard Schmiechen
Richard Kurt Schmiechen (born July 10, 1947 in St. Louis , Missouri , † April 7, 1993 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American director and film producer .
Life
Schmiechen grew up in Pekin , Illinois and attended Columbia College Chicago Film School after graduating from Grinnell College in Iowa . In 1974 he directed his first documentary - short film , Now We Live on Clifton , about the gentrification of West Lincoln Park. In 1977 he worked as an editor for James Ivory's drama The Dance Palace . In 1984 the documentary The Times of Harvey Milk was created about the life and murder of the gay district mayor Harvey Milk . Schmiechen received the Oscar in the category Best Documentary , the film also received two Emmys , the Peabody Award and the New York Film Critics Circle Award .
Schmiechens last directorial work, Changing Our Minds: The Story of Dr. Evelyn Hooker was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary in 1993. He died of complications from AIDS at the age of 45.
