Verdensteatret in the center of Tromsø

The Verdensteatret ( German  "World Theater" ) in the northern Norwegian city of Tromsø is Norway's oldest film theater , which is continuously in operation. The cinema , which opened on June 4, 1916, is located on Storgata , the main street in the center of the city. There is a 216-seat screening room in the building and a café in the foyer, which opened in 2006. In addition, the offices of the film production company Filmfalken , the Tromsø Filmklubb and the annual Tromsø Internasjonale Filmfestival (TIFF) are housed in the cultural center. During the festival, in addition to the film program, retrospectives and silent film concerts are also held in the venue .

Originally the cinema had 349 seats and 50 standing places and housed the community's cinematographers . It served the purpose, on the one hand, to wash money into the empty coffers of the municipality and, on the other hand, to “educate the population in an educational and moral manner”. The name “world theater” was chosen to illustrate that cinema “brings the big wide world to Tromsø”. While in the early years the municipality determined the program, which still consisted of silent films , today it is designed by Verdensteatret Cinematek , Tromsø Filmklubb and Tromsø Barnefilmklubb .

The two-and-a-half-story house was built from 1915 to 1916 under the direction of Peter Arnet Amundsen and has been a listed building since 1994 - Norway's first cinema. In 2006 the Tromsø Film Festival Foundation took over responsibility for running Verdensteatret, which, however, is still owned by the Tromsø Municipality.
