Gia Coppola , actually Gian-Carla Coppola , (* 1987 in Los Angeles , California ) is an American film director and screenwriter .

Life

Gia Coppola was born to Gian-Carlo Coppola and Jacqui De La Fontaine. Her father was killed in a boat accident while her mother was pregnant. She grew up in Los Angeles , where she attended the Center for Early Education and the Archer School for Girls . She studied photography at Bard College in New York State . After graduating, she returned to Los Angeles.

In 2013 she made her feature film debut with the film Palo Alto , for which she also wrote the screenplay. The film is based on the eponymous collection of short stories by the actor and author James Franco , who also played a leading role alongside Emma Roberts . The film screened in 2013 at the Telluride Film Festival , the Toronto International Film Festival and at the 70th Venice International Film Festival in the Orizzonti section .

Her second feature film Mainstream with Andrew Garfield , Maya Hawke and Jason Schwartzman was invited to the 77th Venice Film Festival in the Orizzonti section in 2020 .
