occupation

In the south (original title: Vers le sud ) is a French - Canadian film drama from 2005 . Directed by Laurent Cantet , who together with Robin Campillo also wrote the screenplay based on the novel La chair du maître by Dany Laferrière .

action

The action takes place in Haiti in the 1970s , where the Americans Ellen, Brenda and Sue spend their vacations. Ellen is a Boston professor of French literature, Sue works in a factory, Brenda is a housewife and lives in the southern United States. The women have an affair with the 18-year-old local Legba, whom they pay for sex.

The faded-in name Brenda is shown, whereupon she - sitting on a bed - tells how she met the then 15-year-old student Legba three years earlier. He dined with her and spent more and more time with her. One day, three times her old woman seduced Legba on a beach, which she tells with details.

The women go out to eat with Legba in the hotel restaurant. Albert employed there refuses to serve Legba. His name is later shown and he tells how his parents fought against the American occupiers in 1915. He then said the Americans would come up with dollars that are more devastating than weapons.

The women later find out that Legba is killed by the helpers of the ruling Jean-Claude Duvalier . At the end, Brenda is shown saying she is no longer interested in white men and will continue to come to Haiti.

Reviews

Mick LaSalle wrote in the San Francisco Chronicle on September 1, 2006 that the film was as sad as life. He tells a morally and emotionally complex story in which people do something different than they think. He shows normal, recognizable and likeable people who judge themselves. LaSalle praised the portrayal of Charlotte Rampling, which suggests a character in the character that is different from the behavior seen. Karen Young's play is similarly “extraordinary” and “subtle”.

The lexicon of international films wrote that the film was "carried by two excellent actresses" and "coded several times". He does not evaluate the events shown in moral categories. Thanks to the “vague alignment of observations”, he succeeded in depicting “clever images for complex emotional and social relationships”. “Concise subplots and interspersed interview passages” would “make the observations more generalizable”.

Awards

Laurent Cantet was nominated for the Golden Lion in 2005 and received the CinemAvvenire award at the Venice International Film Festival. Ménothy Cesar received the Marcello Mastroianni Prize in 2005 .
