Life

She was born in Oran in 1946 in what was then the French colony of Algeria. In 1962, in her youth, she moved with her family to Paris, where she has lived and been active ever since. In 1964, at the age of 18, she assumed the feminine identity of Marie France . Marie stands for her mother's first name, France for her home country.

She took part in the student protests of May 1968 . She frequented artist circles around André Téchiné , Jean-Pierre Kalfon , Jacques Higelin and Sapho , who often stayed at the La Coupole restaurant . She started working as a showgirl in 1969 . She became known for her imitation of Marilyn Monroe in the Cabaret Alcazar .

Marie France is transsexual. For the first time she became involved in LGBT rights in the activist group Front homosexuel d'action révolutionnaire (FHAR), founded in 1971 and, after its dissolution, in the group Gazolines founded by Maud Molyneux , in which trans women and transvestites organized.

She began her acting career in the 1970s. She starred in the film under art house directors such as Adolfo Arieta and Fernando Arrabal , but also had roles in mainstream films such as Les Keufs (1987) and Belle-maman (1999). She worked at the theater in 1975 under the direction of Frédéric Mitterrand . In 1979 she played in the piece Le Navire Night based on Marguerite Duras . Marguerite Duras said of Marie France: “I would say that she divides the camps into emotion and desire. It is impossible not to be troubled by it. All. Women as well as men. "

She appeared as a singer in André Téchiné's film Barocco in 1976 and performed On se voit se voir by Philippe Sarde , which marked the beginning of her singing career. In 1977 she took her debut single using the composition of Jay Alanksi and Jacques Duvall , with Daisy on the A-side and Déréglée the B-side. Both songs became cult songs . She released her first album in 1981 with 39 de Fièvre , with the rock band Bijou participating. A few more singles followed, but the next album wasn't until 1997 under the name Marie France .

From 1983 to 1987 she had regular screenings of her Marilyn Monroe imitation at Alcatraz.

In 2003 she published her autobiography Elle était une fois . An album with cover versions of Brigitte Bardot songs followed in 2009 .

In 2011 she was awarded the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the Minister of Culture Frédéric Mitterrand.
