action

During an election, Walt's newspaper tries to discredit the socialist candidate with an alleged homosexual affair with boxer Samson. Walt gets support from a group that offers Samson money. However, the candidate's party gets wind of it and pays him the same amount so that he remains silent in order to leave the country with his girlfriend Laure, who had instigated him to act with the financial advantage in mind. At the train station, however, he is prevented from doing so by a hired hit man from the group and is shot by him due to the fact that he does not have the money.

In reality, the beautiful Laure has hidden the money she is looking for and she tracks down Samson's murderer on the run in order to get hold of it. Since the killer is very similar to Samson, Laure falls in love with him more and more. The killer also returns her love and the girl tries to help him escape. The murderer was not supposed to kill Samson, only to prevent him from leaving, which is why his client has Gauthier look for him. Both want to leave the country on a passenger ship that the newspaper publisher Walt also climbs on. The finale takes place at the docks: Walt is shot by a sniper, Laure and her new lover, who was hiding, quickly board the ship.

Reviews

"Less of a political thriller than a fairy-tale exaggerated puzzle game about manipulability and identity," was the lexicon of international films . Barocco is sometimes lengthy, but nonetheless “a film poem of great aesthetic appeal”.

Awards

Téchiné's film was a big favorite at the 1977 César award and led the field of contenders for the French national film award with nine nominations. However, Barocco was defeated by Joseph Losey's drama Monsieur Klein in the important categories of best film and direction . As with the first edition of the film prize a year earlier, the award went to supporting actress Marie-France Pisier for the part of Nelly and the work of cameraman Bruno Nuytten and film composer Philippe Sarde . There were further nominations for Isabelle Adjani as best leading actress , who was defeated by her compatriot Annie Girardot ( Dr. med. Françoise Gailland ), as well as the film editor Claudine Merlin , the sound designer Paul Lainé and the production designer Ferdinando Scarfiotti .
