action

In a cemetery, 13-year-old Thomas meets an escaped convict named Martin, who threatens to demand money from him. Thomas is quite willing to get Martin the money, but he doesn't know where to get it. Since his parents divorced, he has lived with his grandparents in a small French town. His mother Lili and his father Maurice live separately, but not far away. His grandmother, who is currently preparing her grandson's communion , hopes that her daughter Lili will reconcile with Maurice. Lili still desires this. To force her to sleep with him, he threatens to stop his alimony payments and to withdraw custody of Thomas. Lili is also worried about her son. According to the chaplain of his school, Father Sorbier, Thomas' school performance and behavior have deteriorated.

Meanwhile, Thomas wants to steal his mother's money, but ultimately doesn't have the heart. He ends up chatting away the money from his grandfather when he goes fishing as usual. When Thomas brings Martin the money, his accomplice Luc tries to kill the boy. However, Martin steps in and saves Thomas' life. He fights with Luc and kills him with a knife. Then he goes to a night club for a drink. Lili, who runs the nightclub right on a river, helps him find accommodation in a local hotel. When Lili comes home, Thomas tells her about the two convicts. From Thomas' words Lili concludes that it was Martin who demanded the money from Thomas. She realizes that it was Martin who killed his accomplice when she watches Martin bury Luc's body in the cemetery with a young woman. Martin runs after Lili, but lets her go and leaves the area with the young woman who is his and Luc's lover, Alice.

However, Martin returns to the small town shortly afterwards to visit Lili in her nightclub. Both are fascinated by each other and eventually get closer. Lili decides - contrary to her mother's protests - to run away with Martin. When the news about the escape of the two convicts becomes known in town, Thomas is supposed to make a statement to the police. But before he is supposed to do this, he runs away. During a violent storm, he finds her and Martin making love in his mother's house. Confused, Thomas runs away again. Martin runs after him, but is shot by the jealous Alice. The latter in turn kills herself by crashing her sports car into a wall. Lili then makes a statement to the police and leaves the city in a police car. Thomas now lives with his father.
