action

Max, a Jack Russell Terrier , lives in Manhattan with his owner Katie . There he meets frequently with other pets, such as the tabby - cat Chloe, the Pomeranian Lady Gidget, the pug Mel, the dachshunds Buddy or the parakeet Sweetpea. When Katie one day brings a second dog, the Newfoundland mongrel Duke, home from the shelter, Max quickly becomes envious of the new roommate. Duke and Max run downtown together, where the two are attacked by several street cats. After the cats remove their collars from the dogs, Max and Duke are kept by animal hunters for street dogs and taken to be brought to the shelter.

However, they are rescued by the rabbit Snowball, the leader of the "Discarded Pets" group. Snowball and his group have all been abused and abandoned by humans and have therefore developed a hatred of them. Max and Duke pretend to hate people too and are invited to join the group. However, after the street cats reveal to Snowball that they are actually pets , Snowball swears revenge and begins to hunt Max and Duke. Meanwhile, they visit Duke's former owner, Fred. When they arrive at his house, they find out that Fred has passed away, which makes Duke sad and angry. He barks at the new residents of the house and is then picked up to be brought back to the shelter. Max tries to save him, but is attacked by Snowball on the way. Snowball's group members are also captured meanwhile. So he decides to team up with Max to save his friends and Duke together.

The Pomeranian girl Gidget, neighbor and secret admirer of Max, organized during which a rescue operation, one in which, among other things, the air reconnaissance capabilities Rotschwanzbussards come to fruition, who as Beizvogel is held by an old man in a wooden shack on the roof of a skyscraper.

Max and Snowball steal a city bus with which they ram the transporter in which Duke and the other animals are. The members of the "Discarded Pets" managed to break free, but the van with Max and Duke fell into the water. Snowball jumps after Max to give Max the keys to the transporter, with which he and Duke can finally save themselves.

Snowball is then adopted by a little girl and puts aside all the hatred he had against people. Max and Duke also return home, where they are finally reunited with their owner Katie.
