Carice Anouk van Houten (born September 5, 1976 in Leiderdorp , South Holland ) is a Dutch theater and film actress . She won the Golden Calf five times at the Dutch Film Festival for her roles in the films Suzy Q (1999), The mysterious Minusch (2001), Black Book (2006), De Gelukkige Huisvrouw (2010) and Black Butterflies (2011).

Life

Carice van Houten's parents are Margje Strasse and Theodore van Houten. She has a younger sister, Jelka van Houten , who is also an actress. Her parents both worked in television. She went to the St. Bonifatius College in Utrecht , where she played the main role in Hugo Claus' Tijl Uilenspieghel (German: " Till Eulenspiegel "). Then she studied at the Cabaret Academy in Amsterdam .

Her first leading role was played by van Houten in Martin Koolhoven TV film Suzy Q . She won a Golden Calf for her performance . She received this award a second time for her leading role in the movie Die mysterious Minusch in 2001. In the USA she was seen for the first time in the same year in the film AmnesiA , in which she again worked with director Martin Koolhoven.

In 2006 she played the lead role in the war film Black Book , for which she won her third Golden Calf at the Dutch Film Festival. Director Paul Verhoeven praised the fact that he had never worked with such a talented actress. Van Houten's portrayal was also highlighted very positively by the international press.

Thanks to her portrayal in Black Book , she was now able to take part in international film productions and played larger roles in Operation Walküre - Das Stauffenberg Assassination alongside Tom Cruise in 2008 and in Repo Men alongside Jude Law and Forest Whitaker in 2010 . From 2012 to 2019 she played the role of the priestess Melisandre in the American fantasy series Game of Thrones . She was originally intended for the role of Cersei , but was canceled due to the filming of Intruders . In 2016 she played the role of Leni Riefenstahl in the biopic Time for Legends about Jesse Owens and his participation in the 1936 Summer Olympics .

Carice van Houten was in a relationship with the actor Sebastian Koch , her partner in the film Black Book , until 2009 . She has been in a relationship with Guy Pearce since 2015 , with whom she had their first child, a son, in August 2016.
