action

In the mid-1970s, Chuck Wepner is the current heavyweight boxing champion in New Jersey . He is a full-time drinks dealer in the Bayonne district, where he lives with his wife Phyllis and daughter Kimberly, but his dream is to win the title. In September 1974 Chuck fights against Terry Hinke and wins after two rounds with a knock out. Chuck's trainer Al Braverman then receives a call from boxing manager Don King and the offer that Chuck can fight George Foreman. He has to win against Muhammad Ali beforehand. In the cinema, Chuck and Phyllis watch the fight and how Ali surprisingly defeats Foreman. Following his frustration, Chuck meets a stranger after the performance, but Phyllis catches him. She takes their daughter and moves out.

His trainer Braverman explains that he will now fight Ali, who will defend his title against a white man, and Chuck is the only white in the top 10. The two meet for the first time at a press conference in New York. Ali is the clear favorite and the press doesn't take Chuck seriously, but Chuck takes his chance and is training professionally full-time for the first time. The night before the fight, Phyllis shows up in his hotel room. In the title fight for the world championship, Ali is clearly superior. Chuck stays on his feet and survives lap after lap. The fans love him. In the 9th round, Chuck Ali even knocks down and sees himself as the winner. But Ali gets back on his feet and is angry. 19 seconds before the end of the 15th round, Chuck is declared defeated by a technical knockout .

Even if the press and Ali claim that Chuck stood on his foot and Ali fell because of it, Chuck is celebrated from all sides and chosen as a folk hero, which he celebrates with wild party nights. One evening, Chuck meets the bartender Linda and confesses his love to her. But he's married, which is why she's dismissing him. Chuck learns that someone named Sylvester Stallone made a movie inspired by his fight against Ali. From now on he is called "the real Rocky" and feels like a movie star. He celebrates parties and uses cocaine for the first time , after which Phyllis finally throws him out of the apartment.

Chuck emerges as a showman to keep himself famous and talked about while Rocky wins two Oscars . Chuck celebrates success and loses himself more and more in drug intoxication. He visits Stallone and the two meet for the first time. Stallone gives him the script for the second part and invites Chuck to audition for a small role. Under the influence of drugs, Chuck cannot perform confidently and does not get the role.

Three years later: Chuck hardly receives any more offers, and because of an embarrassing appearance at school, he loses contact with his daughter. He meets Linda again, but before the two can get closer, Chuck is lured into a trap and arrested for drug possession. He ends up in jail. There he stays fit and can improve the relationship with his daughter with letters, while Phyllis decides to divorce him. In prison, Sylvester Stallone turns Lock Up - Survival is everything (lock-up) , and Chuck is invited to meet him there. Chuck refuses.

After his release, Chuck works as a show boxer at a charity event. He meets Linda, who found out about his divorce, and the two get together. During a trip together in LA, the two see a statue of Rocky Balboa. Chuck can be photographed with her, but he lets the photo blow away in the wind.
